Here the modelling approach has been extended to 3-dimensions and two different colonies are grown through a porous structure reflecting a more natural environment such as soil. Soil is a complex medium with pore networks on various scales. How this physical porous architecture effects fungal growth can be investigated by combining the modelling approach of Falconer et al. 2005 together with digitised real soil data, obtained using a CT scanner. This demo shows two interacting fungal colonies, again illustrating deadlock. Here the biomass boundaries are heterogeneous as a consequence of the porous network. Further enhancement can be made to the model such as how the distribution of water effects fungal growth.
