A simulation of two fungi competing in a 2D environment
This demo illustrates two different fungal species, characterised by different genotypes. The genotype characterises the modelled physiological traits such as uptake, redistribution of biomass (both structural i.e. hyphal and mobile i.e. mobile phase transported within the colony) and interactions among species. From the genotypes deadlock emerges, where neither individual can enter the territory of the other. This is one of the interaction outcomes observed in the lab when two different fungal colonies are inoculated on an agar plate. Other interaction outcomes such as intermingling, engulfment and lysis can also be replicated by the modelling framework and are a function of the interacting genotypes and the environmental context.
